PicApp at WordCamp Toronto

WordCamps are growing events surrounding the popularity of WordPress. People from all experience levels with the blogging platform get together and interact with each other. For some WordCamp attendees, it is the only conference they attend, and with that, one of their few changes to interact with people that share a common interest.

This year, at WordCamp Toronto, PicApp was proud to not only sponsor, but also to have a representative at the event. David Peralty, whom you all might remember as the former Community Manager of PicApp stepped in and presented on our behalf. David is a well known blogger, and WordPress fanatic.

The presentation was entitled, “The Image Problem - Creating Captivating Blog Posts”, where he went through the issues with most methods bloggers use to add images to their blogs, and why it is important to have multi-media content embedded within your blog posts to drive attraction, page views, and focus.

“I went in there not knowing what the skill level would be of the audience, nor what they would be using WordPress for, but I assumed everyone would be publishing content, and with that text content, they should have some sort of images to help attract people to what they were publishing” - David Peralty (brandingdavid.com)

After David’s presentation, he fielded questions, not only about PicApp and finding free, legal images online, but about the blogging industry as a whole.

Over the course of the three day event, there were numerous talks on blogging, social media, building traffic, branding, and revenue to blogs being powered by WordPress.

Brendan Sera-Shriar, the lead organizer of the event did an amazing job. Logistically, these sorts of events are very complicated to put on, but in the end, everything worked out well.

We are looking forward to WordCamp Toronto 2010, and hope to see even more WordPress fans in attendance.

Our star publishers

Few more loyal, creative publishers I wanted to highlight this week,

The first is rPulse, the site follows and reports on Hollywood and celebrity news while making it its mission to shy away from damaging gossip and rumors. To read more visit rpulse.com (previously known as perezrevenge.com)

Liz and her business partner are doing such a great job, we love your site!

The second is Forum Blue and Gold, I may be a bit biased here (living in LA for a couple of years and being a Lakers fan), but this is a great site, the site takes a straight forward approach and deals with what happens on the court, nothing else, you gotta love that focus- pure basketball.  Check it out at Forum Blue and Gold. Beyond great content I also got an interesting story on- why blue.

Thunder vs. Lakers

Keeping up with so many exciting sports events in March it just makes sense that our third publisher is another great sports site- The Ghostwriter, covering everything NFL and Football, check it our at Ghostwriter.com

2009 Capital One Bowl - Michigan State Spartans v Georgia Bulldogs

Nicely done! it’s great to see such diverse and creative sites.

With so many sports related events happening in March and April, I decided to take a short break and showcase different images- Fashion Shows ones.
China Fashion Week, March 25-31, is evolving from a small scale show to an influential event featuring 30 fashion shows, interestingly, critics say the fashion show has never been so “Chinese” with Chinese elements becoming more chic and popular in the fashion scene around the world.

Picapp’s innovation on JPost

Eyal and I recently talked with Meredith Price Levitt from the Jerusalem Post about Picapp, its origin, value and how we see it developing further.
“… How does Picapp provide more than 20 million high-end copyrighted files from companies like Getty Images and Corbis and license them at no cost to themselves or bloggers?
Therein lies the revolutionary part. By exchanging content for advertising space, they are essentially paying for the images through on-line advertising. Instead of giving publishers and bloggers an image that can be stolen or misused, Picapp provides a link that allows users to paste the image of their choice - (with an advertisement underneath) - into their page or blog. Through this link, Picapp tracks images that are being used on-line and receives revenue from the advertising rather than the bloggers or publishers having to pay for expensive rights.”
