If you’re a long time PicApp user or just following our work you know that we are always looking for new ways to stay ahead and make PicApp better.

For the last few months a bunch of geeks, aka our tech team, focused on making our service more stable, simpler to use and mainly faster. We’ve listened to your feedback and requests and today we’re adding a new face to all of the great adjustments we’ve made and are proud to release a new PicApp website.

The top items on your wish list were related to website performance, search quality and image display. The new website is about those exact items.

What can you expect?

Website performance – all actions, especially running searches and grabbing image embed codes, will be super fast – searches are 5 times faster!!!

Search quality – our new search will be more accurate, stable, with a wider range of images (we added new image providers and have several others in the pipeline), a wider range of image collections (sports, science, medical etc.) and the ability to filter searches by categories for your specific blog needs.

Image display – it will be easier and faster to grab image codes and embed them in your blog, the code itself has been modified so images load faster and look better on your blog posts. We have also added “Image Thumbnail” feature, to let you use a thumbnail image as a teaser and drive traffic to the post where the full size image is displayed.

New PicApp tools – with the new website tech backbone in place, we can start releasing new and exciting tools and widgets to create new ways for you to use PicApp and for your readers to interact with your blog content. As part of our new Tools section on our home page, we are excited to release “The picapp search” which enables you to add a direct PicApp search to your personal browser – try it out! We are also extending an invitation to our loyal bloggers to join our Alpha revenue share program. In the coming weeks we’ll deploy more of these to the website so stay tuned….

PicApp at WordCamp Toronto

WordCamps are growing events surrounding the popularity of WordPress. People from all experience levels with the blogging platform get together and interact with each other. For some WordCamp attendees, it is the only conference they attend, and with that, one of their few changes to interact with people that share a common interest.

This year, at WordCamp Toronto, PicApp was proud to not only sponsor, but also to have a representative at the event. David Peralty, whom you all might remember as the former Community Manager of PicApp stepped in and presented on our behalf. David is a well known blogger, and WordPress fanatic.

The presentation was entitled, “The Image Problem - Creating Captivating Blog Posts”, where he went through the issues with most methods bloggers use to add images to their blogs, and why it is important to have multi-media content embedded within your blog posts to drive attraction, page views, and focus.

“I went in there not knowing what the skill level would be of the audience, nor what they would be using WordPress for, but I assumed everyone would be publishing content, and with that text content, they should have some sort of images to help attract people to what they were publishing” - David Peralty (brandingdavid.com)

After David’s presentation, he fielded questions, not only about PicApp and finding free, legal images online, but about the blogging industry as a whole.

Over the course of the three day event, there were numerous talks on blogging, social media, building traffic, branding, and revenue to blogs being powered by WordPress.

Brendan Sera-Shriar, the lead organizer of the event did an amazing job. Logistically, these sorts of events are very complicated to put on, but in the end, everything worked out well.

We are looking forward to WordCamp Toronto 2010, and hope to see even more WordPress fans in attendance.

Best of MVN.com: Top 2009 NFL Draft Picks

Will the Detroit Lions’ selection of Matthew Stafford with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft be viewed as a brilliant move or a blunder? Big Al Beaton agrees that there is no in-between:

From The Wayne Fontes Experience:

The future of the Lions, and the careers of Martin Mayhew and The Schwartz, rests on the shoulders of a a 21-year-old college kid.

For this to be considered a successful signing, Stafford can’t be average. He can’t be a journeyman. He can’t be another Joey Blue Skies/Andre Ware/Chuck Long. No way in Hell, considering the money involved, can he be traded.

***

The best offensive lineman in the draft is off the board at No. 2, writes Greg Trippiedi. The St. Louis Rams replace Orlando Pace with Jason Smith, a big left tackle out of Baylor.

From MVN Outsider:

Jason Smith is not only one of the best players available, but arguably fills the biggest need in the entire draft: Rams LT. He’s a natural pass protector who still has work to do in the running game. This guy was the very best offensive player on the MVN Big Board, and he’s about as close to a sure fire prospect as you can get in the NFL draft.

***

Kansas City Chiefs fans, put the picket signs down, pleads Jon Yoon. Tyson Jackson, defensive end out of LSU, is a great pick for the Chiefs at No. 3.

From Home of the Chiefs:

I know for most of you, this is a head-scratcher and I promise you that there will be a bunch of pissed off co-workers at the water cooler complaining about this pick. But those guys don’t understand the basis of a 3-4 defense and I imagine many of them rely on a 4-3 draft board to determine draft value.

We are kicking off March Madness.
Take out your Brackets and join us for real time images from the games.
As a Bruins fan I opted to use an image from last night- UCLA Bruins v VCU Rams where Darren Collison insisted on not letting Eric Maynor’s last shot get in right at the buzzer resulting in a 65-64 UCLA victory.

Stay tuned!
